How to Adapt the Bathroom to Prevent Falls

The bathroom accounts for a large share of accidents at home among older people, and it is no coincidence: wet floors, hard surfaces, tight spaces and movements that demand balance, like stepping into a bath or getting up from the toilet. The good news is that most of those risks can be cut dramatically without any building work.

1. Being able to shower sitting down

This is probably the change with the biggest impact. A shower stool or chair removes at a stroke the risk of losing your balance with your eyes closed and soap underfoot.

  • Look for a non-slip base and height-adjustable legs.
  • With a backrest and armrests if staying upright or standing up is difficult.
  • Check the maximum user weight and that it fits the shower tray or bath.

2. Firm places to hold on to

Grab rails give a safe point when getting in and out of the shower and standing up from the toilet. One important warning: never use a towel rail or a piece of furniture instead of a properly fixed rail, as they are not designed to take weight.

3. Getting up from the toilet without strain

A low toilet forces a knee and hip bend that many older people cannot do safely. A raised toilet seat reduces that distance and, combined with armrests, changes the experience completely.

4. Avoiding night-time trips

A good share of falls happen at night, walking to the bathroom half asleep. A commode next to the bed removes that journey. If the person also has to be moved, there are wheeled models that serve both for the toilet and for the shower itself.

5. Cheap details that add up

  • A non-slip mat inside and outside the shower.
  • A night light with a sensor in the hallway and bathroom.
  • Removing loose rugs, which are a trip waiting to happen.
  • Keeping shower gel and shampoo within reach from a seated position.
  • Drying the floor as soon as it gets wet.

Where to start if you have to prioritise

If you can only make one change, start with the shower chair. If you can make two, add grab rails. Those two cover most of the risky situations.

You can see the options in bathroom aids, shower stools and seats and commodes.
