The good news is that most of those risks can be cut dramatically without any building work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Being able to shower sitting down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is probably the change with the biggest impact. A <strong>shower stool or chair<\/strong> removes at a stroke the risk of losing your balance with your eyes closed and soap underfoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Look for a <strong>non-slip<\/strong> base and height-adjustable legs.<\/li><li>With a backrest and armrests if staying upright or standing up is difficult.<\/li><li>Check the maximum user weight and that it fits the shower tray or bath.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Firm places to hold on to<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grab rails<\/strong> give a safe point when getting in and out of the shower and standing up from the toilet. One important warning: never use a towel rail or a piece of furniture instead of a properly fixed rail, as they are not designed to take weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Getting up from the toilet without strain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A low toilet forces a knee and hip bend that many older people cannot do safely. A <strong>raised toilet seat<\/strong> reduces that distance and, combined with armrests, changes the experience completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Avoiding night-time trips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good share of falls happen at night, walking to the bathroom half asleep. A <strong>commode<\/strong> next to the bed removes that journey. If the person also has to be moved, there are wheeled models that serve both for the toilet and for the shower itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Cheap details that add up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A <strong>non-slip mat<\/strong> inside and outside the shower.<\/li><li>A <strong>night light<\/strong> with a sensor in the hallway and bathroom.<\/li><li>Removing loose rugs, which are a trip waiting to happen.<\/li><li>Keeping shower gel and shampoo <strong>within reach<\/strong> from a seated position.<\/li><li>Drying the floor as soon as it gets wet.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to start if you have to prioritise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can only make one change, start with the shower chair. If you can make two, add grab rails.
